Abstract
Cars are one prominent example of a combined product consisting of different components originating from diverse engineering disciplines. The foundations of their quality are already established during development. Unfortunately, combined products seem to be especially prone to quality problems, as revealed by many reports. One of the major reasons for this is that project management is not well equipped to handle the rising complexity and diversity of the components and disciplines involved in development. In particular, the latest component added, namely software, is the source of many failures and is associated with many risks. In order to provide better support to project management, an adaptation of current risk management techniques to software-related demands is needed. Such an adaptation, presented in this paper, is the Software Risks Effect Analysis (SREA), which is based on the Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), the state-of-the-art quality-related risk management approach used in the manufacturing industry. Results from the first application of SREA in a case study performed in an industrial setting are also presented.
