BioScan and BioPlan: Methods for the optimisation and planning of production systems for biological and biotechnological products
Abstract

The department "New Applications" at Fraunhofer IPA develops customised production concepts for biotechnological and pharmaceutical companies. These concepts focus on automation, organisational measures and the optimisation of production systems. Fh-IPA is currently implementing two approaches - BioScan and BioPlan - to improve biiotechnological productions. The method "BioScan" is based on a comparison of the future/current situation of the production. Internal and external production requirements are used to determine the future production needs whereas the actual state is analysed through the inspection of the existing production line. The analysis focuses on the following aspects: - Product - Contents/ parts/ materials (such as nutrient solutions, enzymes) - Processes (such as incubation, dosing) - Organisation and - Quality Every aspect of the production process is evaluated using both qualitative and quantitative criteria. These criteria take the specific needs of biotechnological companies into consideration. Using the results of the evaluation areas to be optimised are identified. The method "BioPlan" is implemented in order to develop flexible, capacity-oriented and economicly sound production concepts. These concepts take the actual situation as well as expected future demands into conisderation. BioPlan shows when and how the production process needs to be altered in the future in order to meet production targets. An important point in the design of production concepts is flexibility, which is crucial when a company needs to be able to adapt to changing market conditions. Both "BioScan" and "BioPlan" were successfully implemented in industrial projects.
