Coatings for UV-free electron lasers
Abstract
High performance DUV optics have been developed to create low loss, high reflectivity dielectric mirrors with long lifetimes under harsh and broad band synchrotron radiation environments. That is the topic of this chapter. A brief introduction to FEL principles and to the characteristics of synchrotron radiation which constitute the specific radiation received by a FEL's cavity mirror are discussed in Sect. 1. Sect. 2 treats typical damage observed on SRFEL optics. As concrete examples, in Sect. 3 a review is given on recent optics developed for the FEL project at ELETTRA (Trieste, Italy), Europe's first "third gen eration" high brightness synchrotron radiation source for the VUV/Soft X-ray region. In February 2001, lasing at 189.7 nm was achieved, the shortest wavelength obtained so far with FEL oscillators. Finally, future trends and perspectives are presented in Sect. 4.
