Because of current technical progress in the field of electrical drives and accumulators, the development of active powered prostheses becomes possible. In this paper a general design model to represent the dimensioning of drive systems for any type of prostheses and orthoses is described. After the specification of the theoretical model, the design of a drive system for an active powered artificial knee joint is shown using this model.
