In Germany, the guideline for the connection and parallel operation of generators, connected to the low voltage grid is currently under revision. For the first time, generators with direct connection to low voltage levels will be obliged to actively support the local grid voltage by reactive power provision. This additional measure aims at increasing the hosting capacity of the network while reducing the need for cost intensive network reinforcements. Based on a case study, this paper discusses not only the technical effectiveness and the economical efficiency of reactive power provision through photovoltaic inverters according to the revised technical guideline, but also discusses the pros and cons of autonomous active and reactive power control. The results are gained from RMS-simulations which were conducted for a simulation time of one year. It can be shown that by actively using the controllability of photovoltaic inverters the hosting capacity of a low voltage net work can be increased more economically than by common network reinforcement measures.
