Alternative
Chemical analysis of organic odorants and sensory evaluation of off-odors in technical materials and building products
Abstract

The chemical analysis of organic odorants is a special requirement of sensory analysis. Beyond classical analysis of VOC (volatile organic compounds), the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics (IBP) established a particular branch to elucidate odor active compounds and off-odors. The methods applied are derived from flavor analysis in food chemistry and perfume industry where the identification of odor active trace components is a standardized procedure. Accompanied by sensory evaluation methods, the analytical methods were adapted to the demands of odor active technical materials and building products, and since many years released off-odors and their formation pathways have been identified. That way, industrial partners can be supported in optimization of the overall odor of their products. Furthermore the sources of annoying off-odors in indoor air problem cases can be elucidated.
