Abstract
The present study is concerned with an asymptotic analysis of the stress fields near a bimaterial notch with arbitrary opening angle. The potential directions of crack propagation are determined using the criterion of maximum circumferential stresses. Starting with the problem of notches in homogeneous materials, the methoid is transferred to bimaterial configurations where the notch is loaded according to the crack opening mode. A correlation between crack propagation angle and the degree of mode mixity is obtained.
