Both the continuous monitoring of quality-relevant output values as well as the determination of the relationships of cause and effect between input and output values constitute stiff challenges in a large number of production processes. For example, cast parts cannot as a rule be checked until after a long cooling period; this opens up the possibility that, if any deviation from the process specifications is then discovered, it will already be too late to have prevented the production of further faulty parts in the meantime. In cases where metal parts are given metal coatings, it is frequently even only possible to test the respective quality on a destructive basis. At first glance, the ongoing control of such processes appears impossible. It is against this background that the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) of the RWTH Aachen is developing a method that permits the establishment of a process model for complex manufacturing processes, the objective being to enable the regulating of even complex processes via appropriate control parameters. This involves using the tools of Design of Experiments (DoE) and retrospective data evaluation procedures in combination.
