Electrodeposition of metallic chromium coatings from chromium (III) Electrolytes. Part VI
Abstract

Studies on the electrodeposition of chromium coatings from trivalent chromium electrolytes in undivided cells showed that anodes made of grahite, lead, platinised titanium and stainless steel were not only attacked ut also promoted formation of hexavalent chromium ions. Only metaI oxide coated anodes exhibited not only the necessary chemical stability but also minimal formation of the hexavalent chromium species. Nevertheless, the chromium(lI) required for the process, is oxidised at the anode, implying that only thin chromium coatings can be formed. These results make it clear that when using trivalent chromium electrolytes, separate anode and cathode compartments are necessary. Given this, the adopted Solution was to use anionic membranes and platinised titanium anodes in the anode compartment.
