Abstract
Despite the high concentration of nitrophenols found in atmospheric samples (especially in rainwater) the balance of these potentially phytotoxic compounds is unresolved. We already have investigated the nitration of phenol by the nitrating reagent NO2+, an intermediate in the hydrolysis of N2O5. Compared to N2O5, concentrations of NO2 found in the environment are more than a factor of 100 higher. Furthermore, NO2 is known to react with the phenolate anion.
