Abstract

The aim of Ambient Intelligence (short AmI) is the intensive networking of sensors/actuators, wireless nodes and mobile devices in order to improve processes in daily life. First area of application is the Smart Home where all appliances (HVAC, white goods, shutter, etc.) can be controlled by mobile devices from anywhere. Operation will be context sensitive and adapted to the needs of users. A further application is the efficiency of infrastructures and resources. In this area especially wireless sensor networks are an interesting technology for monitoring tasks, e.g. fire protection, earthquake prediction, energy management and traffic control. The inHaus innovation center of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft offers a comprehensive and sustainable concept for technology innovations in the area of AmI solutions. Due to this novel concept, new integrated process and systems solutions are developed and tested in close cooperation with partners from industry and research. As a result, there are benefits for, on the one hand, constructors, operating authorities and residents in the area of residential properties and, on the other hand, for constructors, investors, operating authorities and users of commercial properties. The vision is that the enhancement of nearly all devices by communication ability and some intelligence leads to a significant support by the intelligent environment on demand. This means that the use of distributed intelligence does not need more knowledge than usual actions like walking, eating or reading.
