Future trends and challenges of R&D. Results of an empirical study within manufacturing industry

This paper reports on the first results from an empirical study among German manufacturing industry. As R&D is an investment in the future some outlook to upcoming trends is helpful for industrial orientation and prioritisation. To be prepared for trends and challenges for the R&D in the next 3-5 years Fraunhofer IAO conducted a survey "R&D Fit for Future" among 100 enterprises from automotive and advanced manufacturing industry. The objective of the research was to find future strategies and trends in R&D management. What are the key challenges in R&D for the next years from an industrial point of view? The survey was structured by the chapters of management, organisation, processes, methods & tools and people.
The paper presents the communalities and differences of trends and challenges between two key industry sectors in the field of R&D-management. It concludes with some recommendations for more general trends in German industry as e.g. "Low Cost Innovation".
