Abstract

As is the case with all metals in solution, the nature of dissolved chromium depends on the other cations and anions present, as well as the pH of the electrolyte. In the electrodeposition of chromium, on account of the prolific hydrogen evolution which also takes place, there is a significant pH change in the near-cathode region. In order to limit this effect, the usual practice is to buffer the solution. The choice of buffer is limited, on account of the properties of a chromium-containing solution (strongly acidic, strongly oxidising or reducing). Candidate buffering species include boric acid, citric acid, or aluminium sulphate.
