Abstract
The control of friction is very important for an energy-efficient function of mechanical motion. The focus of current research is set on the optimization of modern lubricants as well as on the design of friction optimized surface structures. For a specific manipulation of friction surfaces it is important to measure and calculate parameters to derive the tribological behavior. The new approach presented in this paper is the calculation of the characteristic lateral extension of the real contact surface as well as the representative contact radius.
For a holistic approach, the surface has to be extracted with a 3D Coordinate measuring instrument or a form measuring instrument, but with a tip radius according to the smallest functional radius of the surface and an associated sampling distance. The filtering with morphological operations and the calculation of distance and amplitude parameters as well as void and material volume are used as 3D data to associate geometrical surface characteristics to tribological parameters.
