Broadband transmission over light guides

The principles of monomode and multimode optical fibers are discussed, attenuation vs. wavelength is plotted and modulation systems are compared. Semiconductor lasers are explained briefly and it is stated that working lives of 106 to 107 hours can be expected. Modulation methods are compared, linearity is discussed and avalanche diodes are considered. System diagrams are presented and transmission systems of the order of 560 Mbit/sec are referred to.
