Abstract
Improving the toughness of thermosets such as epoxy resins is important for several applications like windmills, aerospace or automotive. A variety of silicon containing materials is available, which can be used for this purpose. These materials differ strongly in their physico-chemical properties. This offers the possibility to choose the optimal modifier for the corresponding application. The available product portfolio covers hard-phase, soft-phase, and liquid materials, respectively. Hard-phase materials are silica particles of different size and morphology or core shell particles with a high-modulus polymeric core and a soft or even hard shell. Soft-phase materials comprise elastomeric particles or core-shell particles with a low-modulus core. Liquid products are tailored polydimethylsiloxanes (PDMS), optimized liquid silicone resins, or silicone co-polymers.
