Titel
On the orographical and thermal forcing of planetary waves - An analytical model
Abstract
The vertical structure of ultra-long waves has been calculated on the basis of a stationary quasi-geostrophic model. The wave equation with a constant zonal wind has been solved in dependence on the orography and diabatic heating. The diabatic heating has been approximated by the turbulent heat exchange between the Earth's surface and the atmosphere, as was given by Doos (1962). In the lower troposphere the amplitude and the phases of planetary waves are immediately determined by the external forcing, in the stratosphere the wave solution depends on the refractive index and shows the well-known westward phase inclination with increasing height. The planetary waves and the related heat flux sensitively depends on the phase difference between orography and the Earth's surface temperature.
