NDT - do we have the potential to predict material properties as yield strength, tensile strength and fracture toughness on the component? A state of the art survey
Abstract
It is obvious - besides the request to have a geometrical description by NDT of a material nonconformity like a crack which is as precise in dimensions as possible in order to reliably calculate the stress intensity factor, material properties as yield strength, tensile strength and fracture toughness are asked for to predict the risk for failure by using for instance the fracture assessment diagram. The Micromagnetic, Multiparameter, Microstructure and Stress Analysis methodology (3MA) was developed as a multiple parameter approach in order to separate between the different and multiple influences. The testing procedures are sensitive to microstructure changes as well as to load-induced and residual stresses. As lattice defects like vacancies, interstitials, dislocations, precipitates, grain and phase boundaries are pinning points to temporarily impeding the dislocation movement under mechanical loads, the same microstructure parameters impede temporarily the movement of magnetic domain walls under magnetic loads. Therefore micromagnetic techniques are especially sensitive to characterize mechanical properties.
