3D TV projection
Abstract
Work being carried out at the Heinrich-Hertz Institute in Berlin could lead to the development of large-screen three-dimensional TV. Within the framework of research on high-definition television (HDTV) the Institute is investigating the feasibility of projecting images to create three-dimensional (3D) effects on large screens. In the first experiments, photo-optical methods were used for the recording and projection of parallax panoramagrams. These were projected with six projectors onto a parallel lenticular screen. On this selective screen the spectator sees five continuously successive stereo images when changing his viewing angle. As in holography, hidden objects appear. The author discusses the principles of stereoscopic viewing, panoramic parallax stereograms, lenticular screens, and the recording and projection system.
