Titel
The response of atmospheric radio noise on 27 kHz to long-term solar variability
Abstract
35 years of monthly median values of the atmospheric radio noise field strength on 27 kHz, measured at the Observatory of Kuhlungsborn, are analysed to determine the monthly anomalies and to test their persistence and response to long-term solar variability. In accordance with the known relation between the influence of solar EUV and UV activity and the attenuation rate of the D-region, a significant dependence of the anomalies on solar activity was obtained for equinoxes and the winter due to the dominant role of the conditions of propagation to the distance atmospheric noise-generating sources. The frequent occurrence of nearby thunderstorms gives rise to the anomalies in summer, which does not respond to the long-term solar variability. Instead, a significant correlation was found between the anomalies in July and the monthly median values of the 850-hPa temperatures of 5 to 9 stations in Central Europe. The numerical response of the atmospheric radio-noise level to solar variability can be estimated by means of linear equations for different seasons.
