Service egineering. Buzzword or discipline?
Abstract
When comparing the research on services to those research activities that focus on material goods, an obvious gap can be observed: While there exist a long tradition and a broad range of methodologies and tools fort he development and design of goods, the creation of new services has hardly become a topic of scientific literature for a long time. Not before the second half of the 90's, "service engineering" - together with similar approaches - has emerged as a new research area, that is concerned with the semantic development and design of service products attempting to efficiently utilise existing engineering know-how. The following paper gives an overview of service engineering, presents past and future research areas in this field and discusses briefly its contribution to Service Science.
