The bit error rate degradation due to echoes caused by cascaded nearly travelling wave amplifiers in an optical DPSK-heterodyne transmission system is calculated. Using these results, an estimate is derived for the maximal allowable facet reflectivity in dependence of the number of in-line optical amplifiers.
