Titel
Ammonia emission and deposition of NHx in the GDR
Abstract
A reassessment of an earlier NH3 emission estimation for the GDR is carried out. The total emission has been estimated to be 350 kt NH3-Na-1 whereas the uncertainty amounts to some 40%. The emission increased from 1950 to 1975 by 65% and has remained constant since 1975. In the authors' opinion the recently established European NH3 emissions may be too low by a factor of 2. The GDR's NH4+ wet deposition amounts to 120+or-20 kt Na-1, whereas the dry deposition of gaseous NH3 may be the same with an uncertainty of a factor of 2. The NH4+ dry deposition with particulate matter seems to be of minor importance. The forests are characterized as an NHx receiver. Nearly 1/3 of the total NH3 emission is released from only 3% of the territory (breeding houses and local environment). The total deposition in this area is >150 kg N ha-1 a-1. The smallest deposition occurs on arable land. The NHx export from the GDR is 1/3 at least of the emission.
