The estimation of motion measurement continues to be an important field of investigation with applications in image coding, bandwidth reduction, standards conversion, and display improvements. In picture coding motion estimation is used to exploit redundancy by minimizing the interpolation error. For motion compensating interpolation however, it is more important to estimate the motion correctly. A greater smoothness of the vector field can be accomplished by taking into consideration local dependencies between the vectors. The smoothness in the adaptive algorithm is controlled here according to the reliability of previously estimated vectors.
