Abstract
Nearly-degenerate four-wave-mixing in traveling wave laser diode amplifiers enables all-optical frequency conversion of an optical data signal. The frequency conversion range is limited by the gain bandwidth of the amplifier, which is about 4000 GHz in the experimental and theoretical work reported here. In general, the conversion efficiency is larger than one due to the internal gain of the amplifier. Moreover, an optical data signal can be converted simultaneously to several (>or=10) different frequencies with use of one semiconductor laser amplifier only. The frequency converter operates for data signals up to 1 Gbit/s independently of modulation scheme and bit rate. It can preferably be applied to angle modulation schemes.
