Titel
Coherent optical fiber communications
Abstract
Coherent lightwave techniques offer a very high detection sensitivity as well as a selectivity similar to that obtained at radio frequencies. Together these features provide a means for exploiting the vast bandwidth of single mode fibers. The technique is suitable for point to point as well as for point to multipoint transmissions. The author discusses theoretical advantages and limitations of the various modulation and detection formats and shows experimental progress towards the implementation of these systems for TV distribution systems.
