Exergy analysis is a powerful tool for the detection and quantification of the improving potential of complex energy systems. Low temperature waste heat is a thermal energy flow with low exergy content, being thus suitable to supply the naturally low-quality (i.e. with low exergy content) thermal energy demands in buildings (space heating and domestic hot water supply) efficiently. In this paper, results from dynamic assessment of the performance of a waste heat based district heating system are presented. Three different hydraulic configurations are investigated. Results show that exergy analysis gives further insight in the performance of the systems than mere energy analysis. Furthermore, strategies for increasing the performance of waste heat powered district heating systems are derived.
