Subband based TV coding
Abstract
The paper describes a subband coding algorithm which has been submitted to MPEG (Motion Picture Experts Group) for subjective testing during the Kurihama meeting in November 1991. It presents the current state of the authors' investigations, most of which have been carried out in the framework of the collaboration of the European projects VADIS and COST 211. The main idea is to achieve a simple but robust coding scheme which is flexible enough to handle future requirements, such as TV and HDTV compatibilities. The field merged frames are coded in 16 subbands. Motion compensated prediction of the frames reduces the temporal redundancy. The results obtained show that subband coding is a competitive alternative to other coding methods.
