Novel optoelectronic spatial light modulators with binary reflection phase gratings down to 1 mu m are presented. The microlithographically produced gratings can be arbitrarily structured so that very fine gratings are achieveable, e.g. linear, circular, or holographic gratings. Their phase modulation is controlled by a liquid crystal layer. Theoretical and experimental investigations have been done which show that a good modulation of the diffraction orders can be obtained. Applications of the modulators are the generation of 2D and 3D images and the realisation of switchable holographic optical elements (HOEs).
