Three-dimensional display technologies suitable for multimedia are compared under the headings of spectacles-based methods (polarisation and time-sequential) and autostereoscopic (slit- and lens-raster and field-lens) methods. Experience with 3D videoconference and remote display applications is summarised. The need for research and development is discussed with regard to displays having freedom of movement in all spatial directions, shaping of the user interface, input equipment and methods, and imaging of motion parallax.
