Polymer waveguide optical switch with < -40 dB polarisation independent crosstalk

A polymer waveguide thermooptic (2*2) switch is reported. It exhibits very low polarisation independent crosstalk of <-40 dB for either switching state with only 3 mW ('cross' state) and 20 mW ('bar' state) electrical power consumption at lambda =1.55 mu m. Based on this switching element, a (4*4) switching matrix with a crosstalk of <-30 dB was fabricated.
