Titel
Levers of tribological optimization
Abstract
Losses due to friction and wear in engines and gears are the main course of energy consumption and pollution in public and individual transportation. Frictional and wear losses are directly coupled to CO2 emission and fuel consumption. It furthermore influences particle generation (soot) and used oil disposal. Whereas over the last decades existing mechanical tolerances have allowed to increase the power density, nowadays downsizing, weight reduction and new combustion techniques drive the mechanical systems to their limits characterized by increased sensitivity and stochastic fails. To solve these scientific and technological challenges a holistic approach is necessary. This approach comprises new materials and coatings, optimized lubricants and additives as well as thermodynamically optimized combustion procedures. This paper summarizes state-of-the-art research contributions and evaluates the levers of tribological optimization with respect to costs and efficiency.
