Abstract
New spot-size transformers for uncladded InGaAsP/InP rib waveguides were fabricated by core thickness tapering, obviating epitaxial regrowth and deep grooves. The coupling loss for flat-end fibres is reduced by 7 dB at improved alignment tolerances.
