A system for expanding a passive optical network (PON) by means of the wavelength division multiplex technique (WDM) is proposed. Important features are that the existing fibre network is not changed, the original 1.3 mu m operation is not affected, and capacity can be adapted according to need. Arrayed waveguide gratings are incorporated to provide channels with increased security and interference protection, and allowing individual bitrate and modulation characteristics. The system has been tested experimentally using failure rate measurement at 2.5 Gbit/s.
