Abstract
Functional elements and architectures for building up 3R (re-amplification, re-shaping, and re-timing) regenerators are described. Loop experiments demonstrate the performance of optical 3R regenerators. The key role of the optical clock for bit rate flexible regeneration and asynchronous operation is pointed out.
