Quantifying the sustainability of products, e.g. polymer based electrical gadgets, is an important issue for further development and introduction to the market. Eco-efficiency analysis considers the economic and life-cycle environmental effects of a product or process. SEEBALANCE® - in addition to the above categories - includes the social dimension in the evaluation of alternative solutions for products in different applications. Both tools are seen as life-cycle management tools and involve the assessment of the entire product life-cycle, from concept development, to design and implementation, further to marketing, and finally, end-of-life issues. Generating a realistic and validated assessment of innovative potentials of products and their applications is important for implementing new solutions for industry and end-users. The final results of said analyses will be displayed in an easily understandable way to support decision-making processes in society, politics, R&D and industry. Polymers from renewable resources will be used as the main examples to show how these methodologies can be used for evaluating and optimizing products and processes over the whole life cycle due to the three dimensions of sustainability.
