Titel
Technological Innovation started by Environmental Concerns
Abstract
Since the beginning of the nineties the application of hazardous lead in electronics has been critically discussed. In the next years lead will be banned from electronics. Especially affected by the ban are solders in the interconnection technology. This process has been driven by legislation in Europe and China, but nowadays is being driven by market and technical requirements. The implementation of lead free soldering is not a drop-in process. Various difficult scientific and technological tasks have to be solved to produce lead free products with high quality and reliability and low environmental burdens in the future. The present paper shows how the better understanding of the soldering process leads to technological innovations, rethinking of organisation and management in electronics manufacturing and thus, provides the basis and opportunities for further improvement and success in the world-wide competition.
