The most important precondition for an environmental assessment of products is the knowledge about their material composition. Often manufacturers and especially distributors do not know the chemical contents (kind and mass) of all components of their products. In this case, chemical analytics are necessary to determine the elements and compounds in an electronic product. Completely quantitative analyses of the complex material mixtures require a high expenditure of time and money. Fast qualitative chemical analyses are often sufficient for first estimations of the chemical composition of electronic components for their environmental assessment. FTIR-spectroscopy and laser induced plasma analysis (LIPAN) as appropriate methods are presented in the following paper.
