Modelling foam structures using random tessellations
Abstract
Random tessellations are powerful tools for studying micro structure-property relations of foams. We present a model based on random Laguerre tessellations which captures the basic features of real foams: microscopic heterogeneity of cell shapes and sizes, locally varying strut thickness, and the presence of closed walls. Its application is discussed by several examples: a closed polymer foam used for the insulation of buildings, an open aluminium. foam for application in heat exchangers, and an open nickel-chromium foam for sound absorption. The model fitting is based on geometric characteristics of the foam structures which are estimated from reconstructed tomographic images of the materials. Furthermore, we show some simulation results for macroscopic properties of the foams and discuss first results relating these properties to geometric characteristics of the microstructure.
