Abstract

Toxicogenomics promises to speed toxicity analyses, streamline drug development, and improve consumer safety. It is a rapidly evolving field of life sciences research that is highly relevant both for basic and applied research, but also from a regulatory perspective. Researchers and professionals in academia, the pharmaceutical and chemical industry as well as regulatory bodies dealing with toxicogenomics will profit from the information provided here by experienced experts. It will be particularly useful for developing research strategies in this field. The authors are working for major research institutions like the Fraunhofer Institute for Toxicology and Experimental Medicine (Germany), the German Cancer Research Center, the National Institute of Environmental Health Science (USA), the National Institute of Health Science (Japan) or for companies like Affymetrix, Altana Pharma, Bayer, Boehringer Ingelheim, Bruker, Merck, Nimblegen, Novartis, and Syngenta. Coverage spans from the technology platforms applied, like DNA arrays or Proteomics, the bioinformatics tools required, to applications of toxicogenomics presented in numerous case studies and includes also an overview of national programmes and initiatives as well as regulatory perspectives.
