When assessing the habitat function of soils two principally different problems have to be distinguished. In the scope of a substance related methodology toxicity values for chemical substances are elaborated, which serve as a basis for the derivation of threshold values (e.g. test values). Contrary to this, a soil related assessment aims to elaborate information on whether and to what extent the habitat function of a specific soil or at a specific site is adversely affected.
For both questions different approaches at different levels of development are available. While considerable progress has been achieved in assessing the toxicity of chemical substances, soil related assessment, still need substantial improvement. Recommendations for the selection of test organisms exist for substance as well as for soil related approaches.
