Proceedings from the CLASSIC Workshop held at the Fraunhofer Institute Schmallenberg, Germany, 30.05.-02-06.1999
Abstract
The Community-Level Aquatic System Studies-Interpretation Criteria (CLASSIC) workshop was held 30 May-2 June 1999, at the Fraunhofer Insitute, Schmallenberg, Germany, under the auspices of the European Commission (EC) Directorates-General Health and Consumer Safety, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) Europe, the Biologische Bundesanstalt für Land- und Forstwirtschaft (BBA), and the Umweltbundesamt (UBA). Objectives of the workshop were - to update, where appropriate, technical guidance on aquatic microcosm and mesocosm study protocols to include recent developments in the science and to provide guidance on the technical sufficiency of studies; - to develop guidance on the ecological interpretation of aquatic microcosm and mesocosm data; and - to develop guidance on implementation of aquatic microcosm and mesocosm studies in regulatory risk assessment. To address the objectives of the workshop, participants were assigned to a number of breakout groups. Each group was provided with questions designed to stimulate discussions on topics associated with the subject areas outlined above. All workshop participants then discussed the findings of the breakout groups in plenary sessions with the aim of arriving at consensus where possible, or clarifying differences of opinion on issues where consensus could not be reached. Subsequent to the workshop, the Organizing Committee (OC) developed these discussions into a set of 16 recommendations, summarized below. This report discusses each recommendation, and presents the relevant portions of the breakout group and plenary session reports on each one.
