Supporting group awareness in multi-user environments through perceptualization
Abstract
Eine Reihe verschiedener Ansätze - u.a.

Rapidly growing, widely used computer networks on the one hand and the emergence of flat, decentralized, distributed organizations on the other hand dramatically increase the demand for computer support of cooperative work. Although computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW) has been a research topic for quite a while and even software industry begins to adopt corresponding concepts, convincing solutions are still rare. This is due to a variety of reasons, ranging from social and organizational problems to purely technical issues. Frequently, groupware systems are little more than single-user applications with added connectivity. In particular, the user interfaces of many CSCW systems suffer from their single-user origins. The design of interfaces for multi-user applications offers many more challenges than the design of interfaces for single user applications, because details that are not relevant for single users have to be integrated. The interface must provide information about what others are doing to efficiently support cooperative work-it must support awareness. Awareness, which can be defined as an understanding of the overall state of a system, is a key factor for CSCW systems-it allows users to coordinate and structure their work, because they can perceive what others are working on. Without awareness, coordinated cooperative work is almost impossible. However, despite its importance, systematic support for this feature in groupware systems is an exception; ad-hoc solutions are prevailing. To support awareness, the user interface of multi-user applications must support perceptualization. Perceptualization denotes the continuous act of making others' activities perceivable at the user interface. Perceptualization is a necessary precondition to become aware of a user action. However, not all forms of perceptualization are equally well suited to stimulate this process. On one hand, enough information to make awareness possible must be conveyed, while on the other hand information overload and user disruption should be prevented. A wide variety of different aspects, including for example relevance metrics, information fidelity, and spatial and temporal distortion, have to be combined to adequately support perceptualization. The presentation discusses design and implementation of multi-user interfaces supporting awareness. Both theoretical aspects and practical implementations are considered. In particular, the following questions regarding the design of user interfaces which support awareness are covered: Why is awareness important in multi-user environments? How is awareness created? How can the user interface support awareness? Which are the key factors for the design of an awareness service? Which are the key factors for the design of perceptualization mechanisms? How can corresponding systems be realized and what do they look like? What are user requirements, expectations, and experiences when using these systems
