Title

Virtual human models in product development

Abstract
Correct ergonomic design of work systems is a major challenge in industrial societies and one of the most important requirements for ensuring humane and economic use of human labor. Virtual human models and virtual reality systems are significant aids to ergonomic design. This paper describes the principle requirements for developing virtual human models and the design concept of the virtual human model system VirtualANTHROPOS. The VirtualANTHROPOS system is initially being used in assembly planning. By assembling and dismantling products virtually, the planner can acquire important data on the economic use of space and on human biokinematics. VirtualANTHROPOS can simulate assembly sequences interactively in a virtual environment that reproduces real production conditions. When determining the optimal method and sequence of assembly, it takes account of the structure and geometry of the relevant product and of the restrictions imposed by inadequate space or limited accessibility.
