Study of usability and acceptance of an ACC driver assistance system
Abstract
Drivers' cooperation with an ACC assistance system (ACC=Adaptive Cruise Control) for autonomous speed and distance control has been investigated by means of field trials with subjects. In test drives, specific traffic situations relevant to the ACC assistance function (car following, approaching) were induced intentionally and passed through with various ACC versions. In another experiment, the use of an ACC version ready for production has been studied when subjects were freely driving in longer test periods. In each case, objective trial measures such as frequency and kind of ACC use were recorded and analyzed as well as frequency and conditions of driver's interventions when utilizing the ACC system. Additionally, subjective judgements of system behaviour and traffic situations were taken down and evaluated. Correlations between objective measures and subjective statements were judged.
